I have been a Christian for more than thirty years, and in that time, I have experienced God’s great love, mercy, strength, and forgiveness. And with His help, I have tried to walk in obedience to Him, and serve Him in whatever way He has asked.
But I must admit, there is one thing that has nagged me about my relationship with God, and it has only grown stronger with each passing year. And that is: I am unable to worship Him in the way that I desire. And it seems that I am most aware of this when I am reading His Word. For within it, I encounter an amazingly glorious God, who is Holy, all-powerful, all-knowing, perfectly just, abundantly loving, inexhaustibly gracious, and who has authority over all things. And when I become focused on these things, I feel so disappointed at the worship I bring to Him.
You see, I know He deserves so much more than my heart is offering Him. And I have become convinced that I will never be able to worship Him in a way that is satisfying to me, for it will always fall short. And this has caused me to pray for decades that He will increase my love for Him, and my awareness of who He is, and that He would work in my heart in such a way that I could worship Him more deeply. And I’m blessed to say that He keeps answering those prayers. Yet the yearning to worship Him more and more remains.
Regarding what I have shared, I find that Psalm 145 best captures the type of worship that I want to bring to God. Just listen to some of David’s words, as he pours forth praise to God and worships Him …
1 I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his greatness is unsearchable.
5 On the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
9 The Lord is good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
10 All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your saints shall bless you!
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
and tell of your power,
12 to make known to the children of man your[b] mighty deeds,
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
Isn’t that beautiful? So, I will keep on striving to offer God the worship He is due. But would you pray for me? For I have told God that there is nothing that I want more. And I suspect that I’m not alone in my desire to worship God more deeply, so, I will pray for you as well. For He is worthy.
In Christ’s Love,
