Against all odds

The battle lines were drawn….

There was Israel on one side with their swords and shields, bows and arrows, horses and armor.

There was Midian on the other side with their swords and shields, bows and arrow, horses and armor…..walls and fortresses….

I have always wondered what it would be like to line up in such a battle line..seeing the enemy for the first time…studying their numbers…their weapons….their formations….their faces. It must be terrifying.

I would think that some of the thoughts that cross a person’s mind in that situation are “Will I die today and if so, how? Will it be an arrow? A sword? Will I be trampled by a horse? Will it be quick? Will I survive but be maimed? Will we win the battle or be taken captive?”

Could you fault anyone for thinking that way? This is war. People get killed. There is no way that an army can go into war and not experience the loss of soldiers….right?

Wrong.

Did you ever read about when Israel went to war against the Midianites in the 31

st

chapter of Numbers. There you will find a most remarkable account of how, after the battle was over and Israel had won, the officers of Israel came with a report that defied all odds:

48Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, approached Moses, 49and they said to Moses, “Your servants have taken a census of men of war who are in our charge, and no man of us is missing

.

Can you imagine? Not one Israelite died. Not one….

God had protected them. He had done the inconceivable. He had done the unexplainable. Not one Midianite arrow found its way. Not one sword held by a Midianite hit its mark….

What is it today that you are dealing with where you are saying, “There is no way out”. “How could there ever be a positive outcome out of this?” “The odds are totally against me.”

Brother. Sister. Let us always remember who we are praying to: 20

Now to Him who is able to do infinitely more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us,

21to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21

Amen indeed.

Are we promised deliverance? No. But do we pray to God with the heart of faith that says, “Lord, I know that you can do infinitely more than I can ask or imagine”?

If God can spare every Israelite soldier from death in a battle against Midian, He may have something incredible to do in your life or mine. Why don’t you bring your “against all odds” situation to Him in prayer.

For Him,

Rob
