For His Name’s Sake

If you are a believer in Jesus, then I have a question for you …

Why did Jesus save you?

And if your response is, “Because He loved me” or “Because He wanted me to be in heaven”, you would be partially right.

I say “partially” because there are several other reasons why Jesus saved you, (and for that matter all whom He has saved), including that He did it for His name’s sake.

But what does that mean?

Well, it doesn’t mean that God had to somehow “clear” His name. Because God never does anything wrong.

So it must have to do with actions that attribute to His name things that are true of His character.

For example:

God is just.

God is gracious.

God is merciful.

So, when He acts, He will do things that attribute to His name justice, mercy, and grace.

And in doing so, He is acting for His name’s sake, and bringing glory to Himself.

And how good it is for Him to do so, because it is through such actions that we come to understand who God is.

So, what does this have to do with your salvation?

Well, when we sinned, God could have given you a free pass, but then He wouldn’t be just.

Or, He could have left you in your sins, with no hope of redemption, but then He wouldn’t be merciful.

But instead, He graciously forgave your sins. Meaning, He gave you something (salvation) that you did not deserve.

So, when He saved you, He acted for His name’s sake. Showing that He is a just, merciful, and gracious God.

Praise His name!

In His Service,

Pastor Rob

“For your name’s sake, O Lord, pardon my guilt, for it is great.” (Psalm 25:11 ESV)
