Not All Pie Tastes Good

I’m a big fan of pie (which is why I have to work out so much 😀).

My favorite is peach, although almost any pie will do.

There is one pie that I am not a great fan of though. It is humble pie. It can get caught in your throat. It never tastes good. It can cause indigestion.

I think one of the things I like the least about humble pie is that you never quite choose to eat it. It always gets served to you by someone or some circumstance.

I have had several pieces of humble pie in my day, and I have observed that while they never taste good, they can produce good. It all depends on whether or not you are open to digesting the contents.

You see, a piece of humble pie is going to reveal inadequacies. It will bring our poor decisions into the light. It has the capability to take a bite out of us – meaning our pride. It also will often require that we must acknowledge our wrongdoing, and look to make it right. The irony is that eating one piece of humble pie may require you to consume many more.

When you eat a piece of humble pie, you can either do all you can to spit it out, or you can wait until the indigestion passes, and see what nutrients are there. This is when humble pie can become your ally. It has a lot to teach. It can make you more humble. More careful. More thoughtful, gentle and kind. It can help you see your need for others, and show you their concern and support.

Generally, it can make you better or bitter.

It also can make you resentful, angry, hard-hearted, arrogant and hurtful. It has the capability of teaching you nothing, and bringing up strong defiance, which you spitefully spew onto others.

The critical moment is when you realize that you have just eaten a piece of it, and now you must choose. Better, or bitter? The Bible talks about both.

“Do not reprove a scoffer, or he will hate you; reprove a wise man, and he will love you. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser; teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning.” Proverbs 9:8-9

For Jesus,

Rob
