Smart Water

I just purchased some “Smart” water (yes, that is actually what it is called). I know it’s smart, because it says so on the label. But, because the advertising intrigued me, I wanted to read the label to find out why this water was so smart.

Here is what it said:

“Clouds get a bad rap. They are unsung heroes because they contain nature’s purest source of water. That is why we copied our puffy white friends to create pure, vapor-distilled smart waters. But we one up the clouds by adding electrolytes. It’s a difference you can taste, unless you like the taste of stuff that comes from underground (like spring water). “

Wow! So much of that was news to me. I had no idea that clouds got a bad rap, or that they were our friends. I hope I haven’t inadvertently contributed to whatever smear-campaign is going on against them. I also had no idea that people could smack-talk spring-water. I guess in today’s day and age, people can smack talk whatever they like. Needless to say, I am clearly not smart, because most of what was shared about the water was incomprehensible to me.

As a matter of fact, I think I am kind of dumb because I just spent $1.50 on water. Now, to my defense, it is not easy to acquire water where I work. Yet something still seems off about me, if I am willing to spend that much on water. I promise you, I will work through my issues this week.

I do however know of some “water”, that if you drink of it, you are definitely smart.

Here is its description:

13 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” John 4:13-14

Now that is special water. So, it is worth asking what ”water” Jesus was talking about. The water Jesus was offering is a spiritual source of contentment that could never be gained through earthly water (or for that matter, any earthly thing). Through this spiritual water, He was offering a relationship with God that would renew people, refresh them, and never become stale. He was inviting them to find the eternal life that was only available through Him. He was saying to all who would place their faith in Him, that they would never yearn again in the deepest part of their spiritual beings once they were His.

We see another reference to spiritual water in the seventh chapter of John, where Jesus says”

37 “On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”[c]39 By this He meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.”

God’s wonderful plan is revealed in these verses. As we come to faith in Christ, we are blessed by the Holy Spirit indwelling us. Our new life in Christ is manifested by the work of the Spirit in us, who seals us for eternal life. Believers in Christ enjoy an intimacy with God that truly satisfies us in ways that nothing else can, because our contentment comes from knowing God and enjoying Him forever.

The wonderful thing is that the water that Christ provides is free. Salvation is a gift and the New Testament proclaims the endless ways in which God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit bless us. Our true thirst can only be quenched by God and our relationship with Him.

I have yet to crack open that bottled water. I am waiting until I am truly thirsty. So there it sits on my desk. It is available whenever I want it. One day I will drink it, and then I will become thirsty again.

Jesus lives in me. He has quenched my deepest thirst. I have been blessed by the Holy Spirit and praise God for the times when I am filled with Him. Praise be to God for eternal life He gives to us, and how, while on this earth, He truly quenches our thirst.
