Where do you think you’re going?

The question was direct and to the point, just like all of Jesus’ questions. The Twelve had just seen Jesus feed the five thousand, but now people were turning from Him and walking away.

“‘You do not want to leave too, do you?’ Jesus asked them. Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go. You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.'” John 6:67, 68

“To whom shall we go?” Indeed. Where, if not to Jesus?

To secular humanism? To alcohol or your drug of choice?
To materialism? To our own devices?

But those don’t really track precisely with Peter’s answer. He did not say, “Where shall we go?” but “To whom?” Peter knew that we are drawn towards a person, and that we need a savior who speaks truth.

Judaism always had strong leaders: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, David. But all of those pointed to Jesus. Who else? The entire Old Testament pointed to Him, as Philip excitedly tells Nathaniel (John 1:45), and Jesus Himself testifies (Luke 24:25-27).

Many go to Muhammed, or Gandhi, or Confucius, or a cult leader. But what do they promise? What can they deliver?

Only Jesus is God’s only begotten Son. John 3:16
Only Jesus is God incarnate. John 1:1-4
Only Jesus died for sinners and can forgive them. Ephesians 1:7
Only Jesus sends the promised Holy Spirit. John 7:37-39
Only Jesus is the way to God and salvation. Acts 4:12

Jesus alone has the words of life, and is the answer for every sinner’s every need, including yours. Have you come to Him?

If not, where do you think you are going?

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'” John 14:6
